First Prize of $500 to Vivienne Pole for Attic
I didn’t tell Pa about the girl I kissed. I’d heard the slurs. I’d heard the drunken rants.
So, I kept quiet as he shook his fists at the gay couple on tv, and said nothing about
the pride flag I’d found in his attic.
Highly Commended — Four Prizes of $50
Young Jung for A Different Christmas, a New Me
Christmas in Korea was cold, but in Australia, I discovered warmth beyond the
season. Under the sun, I felt acceptance and hope. I realised Christmas wasn’t
about the weather but who you share it with. I dreamed of a future where I could
live openly, without hiding who I am.
Anthony Phan for Palmistry
“I’m a palm cartographer,” he proclaimed, studying my hand with deep intensity. “I
see new love in your life. A beautiful girl, radiating positive aura.”
“Did you say…girl?”
“Yes. Sultry phoenix energy! Perfect for a handsome boy like you.”
“…I like men. Did you not foresee that?” “
Ella Micallef for Gaydar Malfunction
“He’s definitely gay,” says Finn, watching the cute bartender.
Clara smirks. “Straight as a fence post.”
Finn grins. “Watch and learn.”
He struts over. “Hey, mate—wanna grab a drink sometime?”
The bartender winks. “Sure. My girlfriend and I love meeting new people.”
Jamie sighs, turning. “Gaydar needs a service.”
Anthony Phan (yes, congrats to Anthony again!) for Fugue No 13
The girls in music class fawned over him. He showed me Beatles riffs on his guitar.
I showed him Paganini. We were inseparable friends.
Then I cut the cord. Secret crushes on straight guys like him never end well.
I see his photos online sometimes. He’s smiling beside his boyfriend.
